Applications must be completed by 11:59pm on October 20, 2024, to be eligible to take the exam.  No applications will be accepted after this date.

The City of Ottawa Civil Service Commission is accepting applications to establish a telecommunicator eligibility register. The hours of work are 12 hours per shift on an average 40-hour work week, continuous operation, including weekends and holidays. Applicants are subject to an extensive background check. The job description is as follows:

“TELECOMMUNICATOR: The job includes but is not limited to answering incoming calls for police and fire issues, dispatching calls for service to police and fire personnel, maintaining radio contact with medics, firemen and police officers and operating the LEAD system and in-house software.”

Residency within twenty (20) miles of the City of Ottawa corporate limits must be established and maintained within fifteen (15) months of employment.

This exam will be given at City Hall, 301 West Madison Street, Ottawa, Illinois on October 30, 2024 beginning promptly at 5:30 p.m.

TELECOMMUNICATOR FACT SHEET

Below is an outline of the various points that you should know about the position of Telecommunicator. Please read them over carefully so that there will be no misunderstanding of what you can expect, and what will be expected of you.

YOU CAN EXPECT:

1. Starting salary of $60,495.00 as of May 1, 2024.

2. Probationary period for Telecommunicator is 12 months.

3. Paid vacations, medical and prescription insurance, life insurance, dental insurance.

4. Opportunity to further your education.

5. Twelve-hour shifts, rebid yearly based on seniority.

6. Fourteen weeks of initial, intense Telecommunicator training.

7. After being appointed, and within 15 months, residency must be maintained within twenty (20) miles of the City of Ottawa, Illinois corporate limits.

HIRING PROCEDURE:

1. The application must be completed in its entirety and submitted according to instructions. Failure to complete the application may result in disqualification of the applicant by the Ottawa Civil Service Commission.

2. An orientation and written test will be administered to all applicants.

3. Eligibility scores are calculated based on written examination results and additional preference points claimed by the applicant for Military Service.

4. Following establishment of a Civil Service Commission eligibility register, employment is subject to an oral interview, mandatory dispatch center observation period, an extensive background investigation, a thorough psychological examination, and physical examination, which includes a test to screen for the use of drugs and/or narcotics.
